Walking into my classroom for the first time, I thought to myself "Where do I even start? How can I create a nurturing learning environment, that promotes a classroom family?" Unfortunately, I realized to bring my hopes and classroom dreams to life, it takes resources. Resources which, as a first year teacher, I need support. From my experience, I have discovered that kids have optimal brain function when they are most comfortable or even moving around. These flexible seating arrangements will allow the child to become focused, calm, and relaxed. Also allowing the students to sit wherever THEY choose and work with clipboards, rather than a desk and chair. For whole group instruction, I have chosen alphabet sit spots for the students to sit in a designated area on the rug. What better way to help promote letter recognition, and improve classroom management, than to allow students to choose their own letter to sit on when working on the rug? These little scholars will be challenged to choose and sit on an unknown letter or a letter with an unfamiliar letter sound. Now you might be wondering, why a trampoline? While working with another kindergarten classroom teacher, I noticed how a trampoline was used as a positive incentive/reinforcement. The trampoline remains in the middle of the rug throughout the school day. Students are able to bounce on the trampoline when they act in a way that promotes a safe classroom or school family. Rather than a behavior chart, the trampoline will be used as the classroom incentive.
