As a fifth-grade reading teacher who is looking forward to the 2019-20 school year, I have thought a lot about how I intend to incorporate practices of responsive literacy and guided reading into my daily routine. Additionally, thanks to countless donations from family and friends, our classroom library has grown immensely this year. Therefore my fifth-grade students will be reading lots and lots of text at their instructional levels in instructional reading groups and for pleasure! My goal for this year is to expose them to as much high-interest text at their reading levels as possible! They’ll be guided through many of these texts and asked to answer deep questions about them that provoke critical thinking. I would like to use these wobble stools at my small group instruction table during our reading block, and use the other materials to make our library a more engaging space! With these stools, students would be able to wiggle and wobble as they read, work, and learn together. Allowing for some extra movement will help with sparking interest and excitement. I will also be teaching students with ADHD, Autism, and other learning disabilities. These stools will help those students be successful in my inclusive classroom. Providing an opportunity for movement during ELA will be beyond beneficial! In addition to providing movement during small group instruction, the remaining materials will help me to make my library a space that is more welcoming for students. These additional materials will also serve as flexible seating options during independent and center time. Students will be presented with the options of choosing where they would like to sit in the classroom during these times. This will increase my students' autonomy in their learning choices based on their own unique needs.
