So many of my students walk into English I as freshmen and say they hate reading--hate it! Usually, it stems from bad experiences or a lack of confidence in their reading skills. As an English teacher, I want to share the magic of reading with my students; it's a lifelong skill and one that can not only be utilized in professional matters, but also to experience worlds outside their own. I want to start the year with a high-interest novel to grab their attention and pull in these reluctant readers; The Hunger Games is exactly the fictional world they would love exploring. By having a set of novels for my students, within which each of them will have their own, brand-new copy, I hope to start the year making my students feel valued. I hope to spark a love, or at least lessen a dislike of reading.
