The materials I have selected are centered around my goal to give students access to something most of them have literally never seen before: microscopic images. A digital microscope would give my students a completely new view of the world around them. We do not have microscopes in our classroom. With the purchase of ONE digital microscope connected to my classroom laptop and projector, ALL of my students would be able to see images of materials related to all our areas of study this year: photosynthesis, physical and chemical properties of matter, and human activities and global climate change (among many others). As an added benefit, I would share this resource with my 5th, 6th, and 8th grade science team teachers. I have also selected products (folders, copy paper, and pencils) that will enable each student to create a set of lab materials (observations and notes) and anchor chart paper that my students can use to display their observations around our classroom. Lab folders will be very important for my students to be able to keep and reflect on their observations. I have included these products in the materials I have selected so that I do not have to ask students' families to buy supplies and commit financial resources they may well not have. I have also selected a document camera that would enable me to share print materials with my entire class, and would also make it possible for my students to share their lab notebook observations with their classmates.
