During our professional development this summer Lester Laminack (one of my favorite authors) came to speak to the teachers at District 108 about our classroom libraries. He asked us some tough questions: How many of your books feature girls? How many of your books features boys? How many books do you have about African Americans? Middle Eastern? Latino? Native American? Characters with low socioeconomic status? Characters who are non traditional? Our students in our class need to feel represented, the books need to mirror them making them feel seen and heard. Books should also be doors to the outside world. They can open our students up to new cultures, new ways of thinking, and they can really appreciate and understand diversity. These books will be read every single day during reader's workshop. Students can check them out and share them with friends. We will feature them throughout the year as read alouds. Class discussions around the books will be rich and meaningful, I can't wait!!
