The most important thing my students need is an inclusive, comfortable classroom. It is difficult to find a carpet that fits 28 second graders. Last year I bought a carpet where almost half of my class did not fit and they had to sit on the hard floor. Having a big comfortable carpet is extremely important for second grade. When we start our day, we always start on the carpet where we greet each other and give a handshake, fist bump, or high five. This is when social skills are taught. Beginning their day with a welcoming and caring greeting reflects how the rest of their day will go. When morning meeting is established and completed correctly, it helps jump start the rest of their day. Throughout the day I use the carpet as a flexible seating choice. Students choose to pick a clip board and complete their work independently or with a partner on the carpet. Having a comfortable environment allows students to want to learn. With my students, what they go home to is unpredictable. I try my best to create a classroom they want to learn in. I create something they may not have at home. Having a carpet in classrooms is an essential learning tool, not only academically but socially and emotionally.
