Abraham Lincoln said, “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” It is my job as a teacher to facilitate this creation by providing an environment rich with experience and skills they will need for their future. More and more, textbooks are online. Resources, like flipgrid, Commonlit, Avid’s e-binder, Google Classroom, etc., are also online. Ultimately, I would like a 1-1 ratio of students to classroom computers, and students should be utilizing technology daily. Currently in my classroom, I have 10 Chromebooks. They are old, missing keys, and some just don’t work. I have up to 30 students per class. I am able to check out additional Chromebooks, however not on a daily basis. The possibilities are limitless, but I have several things in mind. Students will complete all writing and respond to reading assignments in an online binder. They will read and annotate short stories and nonfiction articles online. Students will utilize Google Classroom to turn in assignments and keep an ongoing class portfolio. I also would like students to interact with young adult authors. This will help them to learn professional writing in an authentic manner. While most kids are tech-savvy, they aren’t savvy in the way they need to be for their futures. They can navigate Fortnite, but they can’t type or determine which sites have the best information.
