With us being located in Jacksonville, NC we read about the coast and the beach and the mountains all the time. I am looking to get two class sets of novels that take us OUT of NC and out of our comfort zones. Through "A Long Walk to Water" my students will be transported out of our neck of the woods, the one we are so comfortable with, to the continent of Africa, where we will read and learn about some not some comfortable issues. They will be introduced to a problem that they do not have to worry about, but one that people have to worry about EVERY SINGLE DAY there - getting water. As we read we will complete activities that simulate the happenings in the book, lugging water up and down the football field, bringing the struggle to REAL life for the students. We will research and "invent" ways to help countries solve problems like this. The students will not only read the book, but experience it. The novel "Restart" brings two other real-life issues to the students in the form of some really good literature that they can connect with--BULLYING and FRIENDSHIP in middle school. Through the happenings to the main character, the students will encounter problems that many of them have experienced or will experience in middle school. This book does an excellent job of teaching students that it's never too late to change how you treat people. This book will lend itself to many meaningful conversations and activities for the students. Life-long lessons will be taught through this wonderful piece of literature that the students can RELATE to. It is all about getting them and keeping them interested!
