My job is to give my students the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to be educated, productive life-long learners and members of a society and world that is ever-changing. With these novels, students will engage in Literature Circles through which they will read and discuss the social, political, and thematic aspects of each. They will examine their lives and apply what they discover in the novels to their own experiences. They will become more aware of the world in relation to issues that plague the US and people within it. Allowing them to see life beyond the walls of the classroom by bringing poignant stories of diverse cultures and experiences is one of the best ways to meet the requirements of my job and exceed the expectations I have set for myself as a member of society. They must see life outside their comfort zone in order to comprehend the world in which they live.
