Most of my students have no reading life outside of my classroom. Book access is very difficult for them. When they come to my room in the fall they view reading as a “school only” activity. I continue to grow my classroom library each year in an effort to expand their literate world, but the cost of good books makes it difficult. Most of the books I am asking for have a rich story, beautiful language, and a theme of kindness or community. The lessons these stories teach will have a positive impact on the type of climate I strive to have within our classroom every year. These books lend themselves to class discussions where we can dig deep into the theme, as well as expand vocabulary and practice comprehension strategies. I will use these books in multiples ways, all of which will benefit my students.
