The Rochester City School District is one of the worst performing districts in the country. As a dedicated teacher in the RCSD, I witness first hand the many reasons our district continues to fail year after year. Many of these reasons are out of our control such as parent involvement, student absenteeism, lack of motivation, etc. However, what we do have in our control is what we choose to bring to our students when we see them for those short 45 minutes every day in our classrooms. I want those 45 minutes to be meaningful, engaging, and exciting for my students. This, however, can not be achieved when we force our students to read texts that are outdated and have no cultural relevancy. We need stories that our students will be rushing to class for to read the next chapter because the story is THAT good! With these new books, our students can have that opportunity.
