Safe spaces in the classroom, which I call my "time and space" corner, support social-emotional learning by helping kids pay attention to their feelings and allows them to learn how to manage them. I have created a space for them to decompress, collect their feelings, take a short break so they can regain focus and rejoin the class activities. As a teacher in Schenectady, New York, an urban setting where poverty is an issue dealt with everyday, students need alternative options in the classroom to help cope with trauma. I also wanted to fill my classroom with flexible seating options to promote more student choice in the classroom and create a more engaged and exciting learning space. I am hopeful that these changes to my classroom with pay huge dividends with my students. I am attempting to give our children a place where they feel comfortable and safe, helping those suffering from intense levels of trauma at home, thus enhancing their ability to learn. I appreciate any help that is given.
