Along with teaching reading, writing, and math to students having difficulty with academics, I also provide support to students who are exhibiting behavioral difficulties and students with poor communication skills. For my little ones (kindergarten through second grade), students do not clearly communicate their needs and how they can be resolved. I think of every trick in the book to try to comfort and figure out what I can do to support my students during a meltdown/difficult time. These items will give students cool-down strategies and sensory-processing tools to help them regulate themselves and return to the typical school environment as a successful child in the classroom. Weighted blankets, lap pads, and weighted/stretch animals will give students options to regulate their body and reset their mind from an upsetting/frustrating situation. My students will know that they can come to my classroom and use these items to feel better and change their mindset. The writing tools will help my students with fine-motor and visual processing difficulty to have the support they need to complete work with ease. The timers will help students with transitions from place to place and to help them practice their fluency skills in reading. I can't wait to show my students these items and to see their reaction when they can complete work independently! These students deserve the best!
