I have been teaching Reading Workshop for nine years. I model best practices and strategies through read aloud and think aloud. Then, students practice these strategies in a text of their choice or in reading clubs. Students find success when they are provided with the opportunity to choose. There is a direct correlation between time spent reading and reading success. Giving students choice creates a sense of ownership and empowerment. It also ensures students are interested in their learning. Providing students with books of high interests and readability is essential for success. An organized, beautiful classroom library is the foundation of a classroom.
