How many of you would like to sit at a square desk and a blue chair day in and day out? Neither would my 5th graders! Flexible seating will give my students the opportunity to choose where they would like to sit and learn each day. Not only do the students get to choose their seat for the day but it also allows increased collaboration among the class which is important in creating a positive classroom community. Flexible seating also positively impacts behavior. I have chosen items to allow for flexible seating in my classroom but also chose items that would continue to build my classroom community. The items I have chosen will go well with the sofa I've already purchased and allow for a variety of choices. The rugs will be used for our classroom meetings. Stools will be used for seating in the classroom but will also be used at my guided reading table. The two 3 piece breakfast sets will provide a different type of seating option where 2 students can have a taller surface to use. Floor pillows will offer students who want to sit at my low table a cushioned spot. Balance discs can be used for sitting at my low table or for any students who might need it at my reading table. The bulletin board paper will be used to create a different look and feel to my classroom and lamps will provide enhanced lighting. My son's 5th grade teacher used flexible seating in her classroom and it was a positive experience for him and his classmates. I hope to create this same type of experience for my students with your help!
