The data and measurement math unit is the hardest unit for my 1st grade students to understand. All the items on my list will have a direct use in this unit. The measuring tape will coincide with an activity in which students will have to measure different objects throughout the school to measure its length. The How Long Is It Measurement Center will serve as a fun math center that will help reinforce what was learned in whole group. The hands-on math trays and counters will help students explore the different ways items can be sorted (color, size, etc) and how they are compared to one another. The reusable wipe and write pockets will be used as a means for students to write down their answers when measuring or collecting data. If students make mistake, they can easily erase and correct their own thinking. The timer will allow for smooth transitions to the next learning activity.
Your donation will not only increase student engagement, but also change the way students view learning math. Students will now be able to realize that math is not just completing problems on a piece of paper; but understand it has a real world application to it.
