All students need support when it comes to social-emotional skills. What better way to teach it then through high-quality literature? My intention is to read at least 100 books about social and emotional skills throughout the year. Following these read alouds will be authentic conversation and application practice. Students will learn to be kind to others and themselves, how to manage and identify their emotions, how to stand up for themselves and others, etc. On top of all those skills, students will be building a strong community within our classroom. These skills will then transfer to other communities they belong to, such as within their whole school and in their sports teams. When students feel emotionally and socially safe, they are more likely and willing to learn math, science and other subjects. The end goal is to set my students up for success not only academically, but socially and emotionally!
