Flexible seating allows students to become independent decision makers and use critical thinking skills to be in control of their own learning. They can take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. They love the opportunity to read a book on the floor seats and they are much more willing to read independently when they can do it in a comfy floor chair. We know that learning is an individual process and each child learns differently. By giving them seating options, we can help them to process and retain concepts from the lesson to the best of their ability. Also, stools are effective during guided reading time as it helps them to gather around our reading table. Wobbly stools are perfect for my students who need to work on core strength as well. Effective classroom management techniques allow for each student to take ownership of the daily routine while encouraging them to work together. The book bins, pocket charts and caddies will be used to organize materials for easy student access. After the first few weeks of school I love to see how the students begin to use these items to contribute to the seamless operation of the classroom routines. They love to have a job!
