I teach young adults and unfortunately, they are confined to small and uncomfortable desks designed for younger children. Watching these young adults wedge themselves into strange contorted positions while trying to balance their books, technology and work on a very limited surface is genuinely uncomfortable to watch. How can they focus? How can they spread out their work and get to the business of critical thinking? It takes away from their learning environment. I want to free my students from the confines of discomfort and limitations by providing them with adult size chairs and tables that aren't attached. There is enough in this world that hinders learning, I can control the environment and make sure all my students are comfortable and have space to work. Additionally, movable seating is conducive to high level educational strategies like project based work, literature circles and Socratic seminars.
