Students that read for pleasure have a higher reading achievement than those who do not. However, getting students to read leisurely isn't so simple. I want to build a diverse classroom library so that no matter which student seeks my shelves, they can find something that interests them. By surrounding my students with highly-engaging literature that focus on a multitude of personalities, passions, and backgrounds, it will be much easier to press books into the hands of my hesitant readers. On a typical day in my classroom, my students spend ten minutes reading independently. I cannot wait to be able to make those ten minutes more worthwhile with a reading environment that fosters a love for reading relevant literature.
