Storyworks Jr. bi-monthly magazines will excite my students to read new material throughout the year because they have had limited exposure to this type of text. The text features, layout, and colorful design of Storyworks Jr. grabs their attention. Students will use Storyworks Jr. articles to improve vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, as well as build background knowledge of various topics. My students will be exposed to real world events, people, and cultures, expanding their view of the world. These will be kept in their personal book boxes for their "just right books" materials to choose from during independent reading times. Students will be exposed to fiction/nonfiction, poetry, and biographies, just to name a few. Having their very own copies will help them engage more with the text because they can choose to make notes, highlight, or comment in the text. Storyworks Jr. also has an online component where students can access videos related to topics and differentiated leveled texts from the magazine. They also supply resources for close reads and assessments. We will also use Storyworks Jr. at times during small and whole group learning to practice reading, phonics, and grammar skills. As the year progresses, the students will be able to take past copies home with them to enjoy with family members.
