My students’ math understanding and skills are so far below grade level that they can barely comprehend their classroom teachers’ standards based lessons. It is very difficult for a teacher with 25 other students to give these skills deficient students the individual attention they need. So they see me for remediation in the hall (that’s my classroom!). Consider third graders that don’t know what number is one less than 40. Imagine fourth graders who think 300 comes after 209. Without understanding place value, these students cannot develop math sense, and efficient adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing are compromised. They are meeting with failure every day. When these slower learners come to me, I need to motivate them. I need to help them to start finding some success, so they can build their self-esteem. Meeting with success enables them to develop the determination to tackle ensuing math and other educational challenges.
