My young readers-to-be leave their regular classrooms for part of each day to get some extra time and help from me with acquiring the skills they need to be successful readers. This year, due to student population and space issues, I will be moving from a lovely, bright corner classroom, to a smaller, dimmer, windowless room in the center of our building. Before now, our assistant principal used this room, so many students currently think of it as the place where kids were sent when they've had some kind of problem. My goal is to completely re-create this room so that students feel it is a fun, inviting place to practice reading and enjoy books - Camp Read-Away! Having struggled with reading or its related skills in the past, my students need the most engaging environment possible to help them feel safe and comfortable, and motivated to try their best when they are in my room. Because we are in rural Alaska, the Woodland Friends decor reflects our local scenery, wildlife, and activities, and will be familiar and fun for my K-2 students. My hope is that it will spark conversations and help students make connections with sounds, letters, and written language. The room will be full of books on many topics at a variety of levels so that students can practice effectively. The tepee, accented with fairy lights, will be an inviting spot for partner reading of our books, or for students who want a quiet space of their own for independent practice - and it will be a perfect fit for the outdoorsy theme of the room! Your support will make Camp Read-Away a reality - thank you for your interest!
