Hi there, my name is Drew and I live in Portland, Oregon. This will be my first year of teaching! While it’s my first year of teaching my own classroom, I have worked at this school for the past year as an Educational Assistant. I am beyond excited for this opportunity and to be able to provide a positive environment for these kids. I will be teaching a classroom of 8-10 second graders with high behavioral needs. Much of our student population come from low income households and have endured a trauma in their past or are currently enduring a trauma. Because of the trauma that these kids have already endured in their short lives many of them engage in aggressive behaviors towards others or self-harming aggressive behaviors on a daily basis. All of our kids receive free breakfast and lunch as well as food bags on the weekend and clothes often donated by the teachers. I would like my classroom to be a place for them to feel safe and understood. I also strongly believe in providing sensory tools as a coping skill and a preventative strategy that these kids can use throughout the day. Many of our population do not understand what the concept of “kindness” is and I look forward to being able to teach them the concept as well as what it feels like to be the receiving end of kindness. When their coping skills as well as social skills have developed they will ideally be able to maintain friendships and interact in social situations and hopefully return to their home school.
