This is my first year teaching 11th grade English, and I want to make the books we read both interesting and challenging for students. Columbine is a book that accomplishes both of those goals while remaining in the American Literature curriculum. Unfortunately, my school library does not have enough of these books to give each 11th grade teacher a class set. That means that my students will be expected to purchase the book on their own. Many of my students' families cannot afford tot purchase anything more at the beginning of the year. They are asked for so many school supplies from all of their teachers, which adds up very quickly. I taught these students as 8th graders three years ago, and I ran into a similar issue when they were asked to purchase books for my class at the time. This donor's choose project will allow all of my students, including those that come from lower income families, to have access to the book. We will be reading this book in groups, comparing it to poetry, and doing various activities focusing on point of view, conflict, characterization, figurative language, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and journaling. Students will be expected to write an argumentative essay at the end of reading this text as well. We will have numerous small group and whole class discussions that expand on the text and its implications for schools across the nation.
