I attended SMHS back in 2004. As a teacher returning to give back to my alma mater, I am saddened to see that much of the school looks exactly the same 15 years later. Little to no renovations or upgrades have been made to the music hallway, and Choir was not even available as an option for many students in previous years due to lack of a full-time choir teacher. Our Choir program begins this year as an alternative music elective/Pathway offered to students outside of band.
The choir will go from having one class per day to having 3 full chorus blocks a day, thus tripling the size of our program. This will be a rebuilding year for the choir, but the students’ energy has shown their resilience to circumstances and their willingness to work hard. Many students will be working toward being discovered professionally or auditioning for a college scholarship for vocal performance -- an experience that I once received as a student in their shoes.
These hardworking and dedicated students deserve the opportunity to participate in chorus the way it was meant to be experienced in a group: ON RISERS. I can’t wait to see them put their heart and soul on a stage to perform for the first time as a full Choir. They will stand and sing loud and proud for their community without worrying about being judged for what they don’t have!
