Students are consistently excited at the beginning of every school year at the prospect of learning to communicate with Spanish speakers in their daily lives. Helping students' linguistic skills blossom to the point of conversational Spanish is simple. Consistent exposure to literature above and beyond the curriculum yields amazing gains in literacy in the target language. The students in the introductory level classes have access to such extension materials, but the advanced fourth year students need more rigor and relevance in their classroom library. So much focus for AP Spanish Language is placed on passing the AP test, that students need a break from the intensity of that preparation. This year the advanced students had several books to share, but they were not able to check them out since they all needed to be available in more than one class period. This project has several goals, but the first step is simple. Free the books! When the students are ALL able to check out their own best-selling books they will be familiar with the texts, be able to keep them until they finish, and actually enjoy what they are reading in the target language. I've observed with even a very small selection of titles how students improve their overall comprehension skills immensely and gain a great deal of confidence. This all starts with reading texts they can get lost in rather than the often dry test prep materials they are used to. Having a library that gives students enjoyable options empowers me, as the teacher, to assign more free reading with confidence that great results lie ahead for my students. Thank you for reading about our project and for considering to help us bridge the gap between what is currently available to our students and what our students need!
