My students are about to embark on a learning journey about the impacts of hurricanes on Louisiana's environment and communities. Students will read and analyze informational texts and novels so that they can discuss and write about hurricanes and their impact on Louisiana and people all over the world. My goal is to provide a personal copy of the novel, My Louisiana Sky, to each student in my class. My school has provided us with a classroom set of informational texts and novels that we read throughout this unit. Generally, students can easily share the texts but the pandemic has made that unsafe. Our elementary school is high poverty so many of our families do not have money to buy novels. By providing each student with a personal copy, they will be able to continue reading whether at home or in class. Individual copies of My Louisiana Sky will allow students to practice annotating and would also be a great start to helping build their personal libraries and instill a life long love of reading.
