Part of fostering a positive literacy environment within our classrooms starts with offering choices about literature. Think back to a time when you were in school. You were assigned a book choice that was painful. How did this make you feel about reading? As teachers we do need to assign certain content in order for students to meet rigorous expectations. However, we can do this in a way that allows students some say in how they are learning. Not every student needs to read the same text at the same time. My goal is to offer many choices of books within certain science and social studies topics. The students will have a choice about which "book club" they will join. This collection of American Revolution texts will allow students to choose books that are both of high interest to them and are a good fit. The order includes books in the graphic novel, chapter, and picture book formats. This will allow me to engage all of my students in a fun and appropriate way!
