Most of my students use school instruments, and those that have their own often have cheaper, less-than-great-sounding horns. These clarinets and saxophones can have a drastic improvement in their sound by simply replacing the ligature, which holds the reed, with a higher-quality ligature. Although the off-brand ligatures we have get us by, they break easily and do not allow my students to produce their best sounds. We just completed our second year of playing in competetive marching band, and in the spring we will continue performing for ratings at concert festival. My students practice and work really hard for every performance, and they deserve to have equipment that helps them achieve a great sound.
