During my student teaching, I taught in a classroom with fully implemented flexible seating. Many different seating options were available, and the students had free choice of where to sit during each lesson. A skeptic at first, this experience completely changed my teaching philosophy! The freedom was very empowering to the students and I was blown away by the responsibility they displayed in choosing the spot where they learned best. I would like to provide my students with a similar experience! Learning is not always best accomplished in a desk and chair. Many students do not find traditional classroom seating comfortable and therefore can have trouble concentrating on their learning. After all, how many of us as adults choose to read or do paperwork sitting in a chair at a desk? Some may, but others may prefer to sit at the kitchen table or counter, on the couch, or even on the floor. Students are no different, and flexible seating options will allow them to choose a spot where they are most comfortable and can focus on their learning. I am blessed to have a handy husband that will help me build whiteboard tables of varying heights for my classroom. There will be counter height tables for standing at or sitting on bar stools, regular height tables with exercise balls or stools for seating options, and low tables where students can sit on the floor, a wobble cushion, or a foam mat. The students will have the freedom to choose where they can concentrate best and their learning will benefit as a result!
