Providing my students with a variety of seating options will enhance engagement and focus during both whole class and independent activities. Put 28 six and seven year olds in a classroom and you'll quickly see how wiggly and stimulated they become. Children at this age need freedom to move and work around the room. Students can choose a seat that works best for them to learn and grow. Making these choices will empower students to take ownership of their learning while creating a positive outlet for excess energy. Flexible seating allows me to work in small groups without being interrupted by the need to redirect students. Currently the only options are chair of choice or rainbow rug (our class has tile). Flexible seating options will let my 28 students spread out around the classroom which will allow them to remain focused on tasks.
