I have been a teacher for 14 years teaching grades 4th-6th (currently grade 4)I am currently doing my graduate course work to get my Masters Degree in Language Literacy and Social Justice Studies. Through my graduate course work I learned about the benefits of graphic novels. While graphic novels have increased in popularity among children of all ages in the last few years, there are still some parents and educators that dismiss the medium as trivial or "not a real book" or "junk." We live in a visual society it only makes sense that young students are drawn to visual literature. Graphic novels offer a visual aspect that students want but also teach the required reading skills that students need to be successful readers. Not all comics are about superheroes there is a Pride and Prejudice graphic novel also Shakespearean plays graphic novel. The graphic novel will benefit my struggling readers because they help struggling readers find success, it's a huge self-esteem booster that leads to kids naturally wanting to read more. I know the benefits that graphic novels will bring into my classroom I want my students to have access to a wide verity of graphic novels in both fiction and nonfiction. The school I teach at is a rural farming community with a high level of families living at the poverty level, so many of my students do not have access to books at home. My aspiration is to build my classroom library and reading centers with high quality graphic novels. I want my students to be lifelong readers, to feel successful as readers, and to read for pleasure.
