For most of my students, this year will be the first time they have been to school. To make it an easier transition from being at home all day to being in school, I want to provide a fun, safe and engaging learning environment. To do this, I will offer them choices in how and where they work. Flexible seating allows my students to make choices that work best for them. During independent work periods they choose a location in the classroom where they believe is the best place to complete their work.
Building confident leaders starts with allowing students to take ownership of their learning. Choices on how they do work is an essential component in motivating and engaging them. Flexible seating and various options for center work are ways to build student ownership. Not only can students choose where they want to work, but they can also choose how they want to practice their learning during Centers.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The carpet allows for students to work on the floor. The tear-drop beanbag and floor seats are an alternative to the standard chair most students sit in. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. The math, language arts and STEM activities I selected will be used during independent centers where students will have the opportunity to choose how they want to practice their learning. Rather than paper and pencil work, these activities allow for a hands-on approach which makes learning more engaging and meaningful.
Providing choices can positively affect my students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help them grow even more.
