First grade is a huge growing year. My kids transition from having their test stories read to them, to having to read 2 paragraph long stories on their own. But we know it's more than reading the words on the page, you have to understand it as well. In order to help my kids become strong readers and to hopefully love it, I need to make reading fun and not frustrating. How will I do this? Thanks so much for asking! Leveled readers are just the tool. The text is appropriate and helps young learners grow in confidence. Being a charter school we don't have a huge library with level readers. Having multiple sets of books allows me to have 4 copies of the same book to work in small groups with the kids. Having different levels allows me to make sure each student is getting met where they are academically.
