These early learning tools will be used to enhance and support appropriate social skills and interactions through play with others. Play items such as LEGOS, Zoobs, snap circuits, and items to play house are hands-on tools that many students play with these days and may not have access to at home. Many of our students start kindergarten without having exposure to early learning opportunities such as preschool. Because of this, many students lack the social interactions taught and modeled at a young age. This creates a barrier for students to meet state standards. Since we are a magnet school, we have Magnet School Standards which serve as our vision for student learning. According to those Magnet Standards, in order to be future ready learners with employability skills, students will communicate and work appropriately in collaborative teams to complete tasks with support. As a K-2 team, we have decided that this school year will have a dedicated time for “Discovery Hour”, or play-based learning with peers of that age range. They will be engaged in play-based learning that has been modeled and expectations will be taught for successful collaborations between students. These resources will allow me to have a more diverse set of hands-on activities and tools for students to access.
