My students are great young people coming from the four corners of New York City. Our school is a Title 1 public school with about 90% of students receiving federal founding for free lunches. Most of them are highly motivated to do well, to graduate from high school with the highest GPA possible, and go to college ready to be successful. One major challenge that we face is that their educational background through elementary school and middle school is pretty weak, mostly because of lack of materials due to poor funding, lack of good experienced teachers, lack of positive and enriching learning environments, and lack of resources at home to enhance learning at school. So they start high school with a major handicap in knowledge and resources to bridge the achievement gap with students from wealthier areas.
