In order to give my students an opportunity to read French and learn about the many diverse groups of French-speaking people around the world, I need to provide them with authentic French texts that are written for and about students their own age. These magazines provide them an opportunity to connect with others who are different from them and learn tolerance and solidarity in our ever-changing global world.
What better way to connect with another culture than to read authentic resources about what they write about themselves in their own words. Being able to see through someone else's eyes and learn what is like to be in their shoes allows students to learn compassion and empathy for others. These French magazines will open the door for my students to communicate and make comparisons and connections with French-speaking cultures from around the world, while at the same time learning how communities function, and culture's role in society. By studying how French-speaking people live, work and interact with each other and those outside their community, students will inevitably gain a better understanding of themselves.
