Because my students challenge the status quo, we will look at dystopian societies represented in contemporary literature. While the current novels will appeal to students, this unit will also give students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and to apply that learning in different activities and discussions about our own society. Students will have choices about their learning! They will participate in a "book tasting" to select their novel. They will engage with others reading the same novel in book club and literature circle activities. These activities will give students an opportunity to pace themselves and to focus on the areas/topics that they feel are important or worthy of discussion. By giving my students options and a bit of control over their learning, I am hoping that many of my reluctant readers realize that they do like to read!
