The materials in this project are all ways to help my incoming 6th graders make a smooth transition from elementary to middle school. My students come from several different elementary schools and are accustomed to cozy, cute, and colorful classrooms that create a welcoming environment for them. Once students come to middle school, they often struggle with the shocking differences between the two environments. Most middle school classrooms are filled with only the basic necessities for student learning and look starkly different from the colorful safe-spaces they are used to. Most importantly, the bean bag chairs, rug, and coffee table in this project will be used to create a "reading nook" area for students to come together to relax and read with their new friends. Other materials such as the hanging files, the trays, and the hooks will be used to help students get organized as they ease their way into middle school, where they will now juggle 7 different classes with up to 7 different teachers. The timer will be used to reinforce time management skills that are learned in elementary school and become especially important with the limited class time we have at the middle school. My hope for this project is to welcome my new students to a classroom that is warm and inviting. I want all of my students to come to middle school and feel supported, loved, and happy, instead of fearful and anxious. Many of our students already come to us with anxiety and social-emotional issues, and my classroom could be their escape as they enter middle school!
