Flexible seating allows for one space to be used for multiple purposes and aspects of programming. At the center of our program is the student: his or her identity, aspirations, story, relationships, needs, assets and strengths. When students have a choice of where to be in the room, they address their diverse needs, and own their academic and social-emotional learning. Different from a traditional learning environment, the Journey Program space is used therapeutically and as an academic classroom. For our therapeutic work, our students require safe and flexible seating to reflect, and engage coping techniques. Standing desks provide an option for students with ADHD to focus on academic work, and to safely collaborate with peers.
