“Student engagement, described as the tendency to be behaviorally, emotionally, and cognitively involved in academic activities, is a key construct in motivation research (Thijs & Verkuyten, 2009). Consequently, compared to less engaged peers, engaged students demonstrate more effort, experience more positive emotions and pay more attention in the classroom (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004).”“Encouraging Positive Student Engagement and Motivation: Tips for Teachers” -Tammy L. Stephens, Ph.D., Guest Author, Review360 Pearson Elementary school is one of the most important periods of schooling a child goes through. The teachers set the precedent for learning. It is where the students first decide if they enjoy school. By offering fun, yet purposeful ways for students to learn, they will become actively engaged in their learning. In this exciting, blacklight environment the students will collaborate together to review curriculum-based standards. Below is a list of the materials we will use and how they will be implemented. Jenga Game- Practice math problems and answer reading question stems from a variety of texts. Blacklights/ Glowsticks- As the room is illuminated in ultraviolet light, students will be traveling to different stations to review concepts and watch their answers “light up”. Reactive Tape/ Neon Markers/ Cardstock- These items will help me to set up each station and/or the students to complete each station. Reactive Safety Vests- Because… who would not want to have on clothes that glow? Third grade brings many changes including a lot of testing and a rigorous curriculum. Students are learning how to multiply and divide and are making the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. By providing students with an engaging environment when learning and reviewing concepts, the students will be motivated and attentive. These materials will excite any type of learner and have them asking to learn more!
