Each year around Veterans' Day, I set aside one class period to teach students how to write business letters and how to address envelopes. We make this an authentic experience by writing letters to servicemembers we select from Anysoldier. This is a great website where heroes from all branches of the service sign up to be contacts for their units. Each student writes a letter to someone who is actively serving in one of the armed forces, and we put together a care package to send along with the class set of letters. At first, some students are hesitant, because they don't know what to write. However, the students share ideas, thoughts, and feelings; they support one another's efforts to write meaningful letters by talking about their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, cousins, and friends who are serving or have previously served. When class is over, they are proud to have thanked someone for their service. In order to complete this project, we need assorted stationary, items for the care package(s), and money for the Flat-Rate US Post Office Military boxes. Each contact from Anysoldier.com requests items appropriate for their unit including things they need or like. Sometimes they want ChapStick, or socks, or DVDs. They always want snacks and candy!
