The materials and supplies I am requesting will help mentally teleport our students into a world where they have no worries. When they need to process their emotions or escape the chaos of their world, they can enjoy the calming environment that the counseling office will provide, with special lights and relaxing toys.
Students who have experienced trauma have a high fight or flight response. We would love for them to fly here to get away so that they can reset mentally and go back to class ready to learn. A student who has fallen into conflict with another student may want to disrupt the whole classroom to engage with the other student. Instead, they can come to the counseling office with a hot pass. This will allow them to have access to the many sensory items we have that best fits that child. Once they are calm, they can mediate through the conflict and return back to class.
These materials will provide our students with coping mechanisms that allow their body to reset. Calming skills learned by providing sensory input will last a lifetime.
