Even my students that don't consider themselves readers love when we do read alouds. A book that is always a favorite is Tuck Everlasting. Students usually see the cover and predict that the book will be boring. Fast forward a couple of weeks and the kids beg and plead to read, "just one more chapter!" We will explore themes of the cycle of life, mortality, and independence. Because these are themes that are also relevant to their lives, students begin to blossom as readers and seek out more books after the read aloud has ended. The themes of the book also come up again in our Science units.
