In 7th grade science's engineering unit, the students build heat shields that could be used to help protect a spacecraft from re-entry heating when it returns from space. They build the shields with paper and staples, and we test it using a plumbers torch. They must protect a match head from the torch, and good designs can last for several minutes. When the heat shields fail, it can be hard to see why. Using a thermal camera, students can see hot spots on their shield and improve their designs. By seeing where the paper is heating up under the torch, students can add reinforcement only to that area, creating lighter and better designs in their next round of testing.
