Each of these activities focus on a kindergarten skill that is carried over to first grade. These skill are: sight word knowledge, first sound fluency, and using first sound and a picture to decode larger words. When students master this skill in kindergarten, they have higher chances of being proficient in first grade. If a student lacks these skills they will have a learning gap between themselves and the rest of the grade level. These game-like activities will increase the chances to bridge the gap between kindergarten and first grade skills. The fishing sight words game is a fun way to have students quiz one another to find common sight words on fish. Both the Alphabet Soup Sorters and Alphabet Acorns Activity focus on students' ability to identify the first sound of items. The alphabet soup sorter also has a self check on the back of each item, so students are holding themselves accountable for the work that they do; even in game like activities. Lastly, the Big Box of Easy-to-Read Words is a great way for students to be able to combine sight words skills and first sound fluency skills to be able to decode the larger, harder to read words.
