These students will be asked to use the materials that this grant will supply to create one of the most efficient tools ever designed to help the potter. The coiling method is one of the oldest of all handbuilt pottery techniques, but it is also one of the hardest to control because of the lack of consistency of coil size. Years before the potter's wheel, the extruder was invented. My department owns three (high-priced) extruders, which means they have to share in class and can never take them home. With this project I have designed, each student gets to create and use their own self-made extruder. I am in hopes that these tools will not only give them a way to make better pottery but also give them pride because they made the tool that created that pottery.
