All aboard the Literacy Locomotive. We have no time to waste getting books into the hands of students. Rolling through the hallways into each classroom delivering books along the way will be our Literacy Locomotive, a rainbow-colored train with six cars loaded with leveled reading books separated by subject or genre, e.g. dinosaurs, fantasy. The purpose of this Literacy Locomotive is to excite and engage readers K through fourth grade and to help the classroom teachers match books with kids by providing a wide variety of books for kids at the classroom door on a weekly basis. No longer will students need to wait weeks to get their hands on a new book. Each car in the train will be a different color tailored to a different reading level. Throughout the year, the train cars will feature different genres, big ideas, topics and the dessert books-easy to read books. Our Literacy Locomotive has the potential to triple the number of books available to each grade level by supplementing the classroom libraries with additional books from the Title I Room, school, and public libraries. Once the Literacy Locomotive is loaded with books, it will be the conductor’s job to inspire students and to connect them with books. At each classroom “depot” the conductor of the Literacy Locomotive, in conjunction with the school’s librarian, will provide book talks, lessons on how to choose books using the five-finger rule, and give opportunities for students to recommend the books they have read to their peers and/or teacher. The Literacy Locomotive will certainly pick up steam when it's fully loaded with cargo "books". There will be no stopping it from rolling through the hallways!
