My students learn in cooperative groups through different stations in the classroom. They have the option to stand, sit on the floor or stay in their chairs. I want to implement flexible seating throughout my classroom because I've learned through the years that students have different modalities of learning and some can sit still, others need to stand and yet the rest have to move and fidget in their seat. We teach the curriculum in different ways using visuals, books, sentence stems, videos and peer teaching. Yet our students have to sit in the same chairs even though some need movement to allow them to focus and stay attentive. These Learniture Stools will allow them to be active learners, and will satisfy their need for movement while respecting the space and concentration of their peers. The students will take turns sharing these stools in the stations such as the independent station or the reading station that require the most focus and deep thinking. They will be taught the discipline of taking care of materials for the entire classroom community. Teamwork will also be emphasized because once stations are over and the class is back together the stools will be placed throughout the class to support my students who need them most.
